Seeing as the fossil fuel industry has partnered with Brussels Climate Week, Fossil Free Politics is hosting its own alternative activities!

We have a whole week of actions and workshops exploring how we can cut the fossil fuel industry out of politics. And we aren’t partnering with any fossil fuel companies while we’re at it.

Thursday 15/10

“Managing Conflicts of Interest in Climate Policymaking” workshop

How do conflicts of interest shape climate policy, and what can realistically be done about them? Join us for a special workshop with our academic partners at the University of Bath’s Centre for 21st Century Public Health for an interactive workshop on fossil fuel lobbying and conflicts of interest based on decades of research on the fight for a firewall around the tobacco lobby.

We’ll cover what conflicts of interests actually are, why they pose a problem for policymaking in the public interest, and what new research says about how different policy actors understand and conceptualise them. We’ll then look at how those diverging views shape approaches to managing conflicts, and the implications for political and framing strategies, including exploring what’s feasible versus desirable.

Thursday 15 October 2026, 09:30 – 12:00, Mundo Matonge, Brussels.

Civil Society Pledge workshop

It’s been a year since the launch of our Civil Society Pledge at COP30. It was a collective call to end fossil fuel influence in policymaking, but what has it actually meant in practice?

Join the Fossil Free Politics coalition and CAN Europe for a workshop where we take this pledge and turn it into practical guidance together. We’ll share experiences of lobbying and suggest concrete actions we can all take to protect policymaking from fossil fuel capture and work towards a fossil free politics.

We’ll discuss what those commitments could look like in day-to-day life and where we would need more concrete guidelines. The session is the first of a series of workshops aiming to eventually come up with a practical checklist that helps us limit our interactions with the fossil fuel industry and make the Pledge a working tool rather than just a joint statement of intent. There will be online workshops later in the year where we bring in experiences from organisations across Europe.

All civil society organisations are welcome, whether you have signed the pledge yet or not.

Thursday 15 October 2026, 13:00 – 15:00, Mundo Matonge, Brussels.
